naadbramha - 19 September 2009 On the 19th September in the Auckland Mount Eden War Memorial Hall, an appreciative audience of Indian Classical Music lovers were treated to a three hour presentation of high quality music entitled 'naadbramhin-a jugulbandi'. Representing the Hindusthani (North) style was Satish Sharma (sarod) Manjit Singh (tabla) and Lester Silver (sitar). Representing the Carnatic (South) style was Raman Easwaran (mridangam) and Ashok Malur (violin). Tamboura accompaniment was provided by two musicians, being Manjit Singh's wife, as well as sitar student, Todd Nachowitz. The evening started with a fine presentation by Satish playing raga Darbari Kanada. This was followed by a short tabla presentation by some students and then rounded off with a very professional tabla solo by their teacher, Manjit. In the second half, the scene was set by Ashok presenting a beautiful opening prayer melody on the violin. Then the main piece of the evening was presented, a jugulbandi (duet) in raga Bhoop between Lester and Ashok, with percussion accompaniment and jugulbandi /solos by Manjit and Raman. This was followed by a short piece in raga Desh, a dhun in raga Bhatiyali, a New Zealand folk melody, capped off with a lively popular song by Ashok to complete a wonderful evening's instrumental concert. Audience feedback was very favourable and it is planned that there will be further presentations by this talented group in 2010. The evening was very well organized by Prashant and Varsha Belwalker
