Lester Silver is considered by many to be one of NZ’s foremost Sitar players. He started learning Sitar over 20 years ago.

He has learnt from numerous teachers including Alan Posselt of Australia and Professor Sanjoy Bandophadyay, currently at Rabindra Bharati University of Calcutta, but derived a lot of his early formal training from Professor Prasanta K. Bhanja of Santiniketan, India. Professor Bhanja has toured NZ with Lester’s support, a number of times to great acclaim.

Lester has performed at many venues around NZ and is regularly invited to perform at multi-cultural festivals and concert programmes.

CD NOW AVAILABLE

'Classical North Indian Sitar Melodies. Vol.1'

In this brand new release Lester Silver plays two beautiful evening melodies, Raga Yaman and Raga Jhinjhoti.

Traditional Indian Classical Melodies are called RAGAS. They develop in two parts. The first part is known as ALAP. Alap is an opportunity for the performer to meditatively develop the essential melodic themes of the raga prior to the rhythmical accompaniment of the Tabla (drums). In the first part of each rendition (alap) Lester Silver quietly develops the beauty of each raga, encouraging the listener to relax and enjoy the peace of the evening away from the cares of daily life. In the second section of the alap (jor/jhalla) there develops a sense of rhythm and purposeful enjoyment, a celebration of the meaningfulness of existence.

To purchase this worthwhile addition to your music collection, e-mail silversitar@ihug.co.nz and an order form will be e-mailed back to you.

The CD is on sale for only $20.00 (includes postage, packing & handling in NZ - for overseas, extra costs may apply).
